This workshop brings the Home Front to life with genuine artefacts, costume
and discussion. Get the children in the mood for their visit by researching
clothing in the 1940s. Then they can all arrive in costume and imagine
they are evacuees!
The visit covers Maths, English and Technology as well as History and
the children work in small groups on each of FOUR different activities.
There will be one or two costumed interpreters on hand to explain the
different tasks. Each activity lasts about 20 minutes and all necessary
materials are provided by the Museum.
1. Gas Mask Boxes
Every evacuee had to have a gas mask. In this activity the children have
a go at making boxes to put them in.
2. Wartime People
This activity uses costume and genuine objects from the period to bring
the past to life. Can the children guess who the characters are, and
what they did in the war?
3. Clothes Rationing
Evacuees were only allowed to take a specific amount of clothing with
them when they left the cities for the countryside. With this restriction
and with the added problems of rationing, can the children use their
maths skills to work out how to make the best of their clothing coupons?
4. Gas Attacks
This problem-solving activity helps the children identify different types
of gas mask and other protective equipment. They can also draw the objects
and record the fascinating facts.
