If you ever looked beautiful in beads, funky in flares or stylish in shoulder pads then Trowbridge Museum is desperately seeking you! The Museum we would love to meet you if you were into clothes and fashion between 1967 and 1987 and see your pictures, school photos, wedding albums, even clothes if you still have them, for a community get together on Saturday 7th October, 11am – 3pm. We are especially interested in the late 1960s and early 1970s when rock stars such as David Bowie were influencing everyday fashions and young people, both men and women, were taking a much more relaxed attitude to clothes and personal style. As well as exchanging stories, and laughing at embarrassing photographs we will be carrying out some short oral interviews so make sure you come ready with your memories.

Community Get Together

This event is part of the HLF-funded Fabric of Life project, in which young people across Wiltshire are looking at how fashion is a form of identity, particularly with regard to gender and sexuality, and it is also marking the 50th anniversary of the 1967 Sexual Offences Act. During their research the young people have discovered fascinating things such as women wearing trousers to aid their cycling in the Edwardian era, and the mystery of why men’s and women’s clothes still button on opposites sides! And, is it true that the shell suit is the first gender neutral fashion item?

If you’d like to take part you can just turn up on the day or for more information contact the Museum’s Learning and Outreach Officer, David Birks, on 01225 751339 or at david.birks@trowbridge.gov.uk.
