Factor

Some cloth was sold locally to merchants in Salisbury. The Factor was a middle man, often based in London, who sold the clothier’s cloth. Cloth was bought and sold in Blackwell Hall in Basinghall Street in the City of London. Some clothiers did set up their own London warehouses which was cheaper than paying London charges. Davis and Dowding were cloth factors in Trowbridge in 1770.
