School Workshops for KS1: How the Victorians Lived
In this workshop the children learn about many different aspects
of life in Victorian times. The visit covers Maths, English and
Technology as well as History. The class works in small groups
on each of the FOUR activities. There will be one or two costumed
interpreters on hand to explain the different tasks. Each activity
lasts about 20 minutes and all instructions and materials are provided
by the Museum.
1. How to make a Victorian Toy
Each child makes their own thaumatrope, a simple Victorian toy
that creates an optical illusion.
2. Investigating Victorian Objects
There are several genuine Victorian objects for the children to
investigate; they decide which descriptions apply to which item
before making drawings to take back to school.
3. Victorian Maths Games
The children play different Victorian games and practise their
maths skills by keeping score.
4. Victorian People
Can the children work out what jobs different Victorian people
do by looking at their clothes? This is a fun opportunity for
the children to dress up in several replica costumes and really
get the feel of the Victorian era.
