School Workshops for KS1 & 2: Working with Wool
This lively and practical workshop is the Museum’s speciality.
It links in closely with Science (Materials), Technology, Maths
and English. The class work in small groups on each of FOUR activities.
There will be one or two Museum staff on hand to explain the different
tasks. Each activity lasts about 20 minutes and instructions and
materials are provided by the Museum.
1. Wool processing
The children work with sheep’s fleece, cleaning and combing
it into rolags which they can take back to school with them.
2. Cloth Patterns
The Museum displays are used to inspire cloth designs and colours;
this activity also develops the pupils’ Maths skills by
looking at repeating patterns.
3. Woollen Mill Factory Tour
The Museum is full of machinery and tools related to the woollen
industry. A simple trail guides the children round the gallery,
focussing on relevant items. The children will also be encouraged
to ask and answer questions about the cloth industry.
4. The Farmer’s Woolly Tale
To get an idea of all the different processes needed to turn sheep’s
fleece into wool, there is an interactive story with a few props
to really bring it to life.
