School Workshops for KS2: How the Tudors Lived
This entertaining and unusual workshop gives a taste of what it
was like to live in England 500 years ago. The class can really
contribute to the activities by wearing Tudor costume; they will
at least need aprons because some of the tasks are rather messy!
The workshop covers Maths, English and Technology/Science as
well as History. The class work in small groups on each of the
FOUR activities. There will be one or two costumed interpreters
on hand to explain the different tasks. Each activity lasts about
20 minutes and all instructions and materials are provided by the
Museum.
1. Butter Making
In Tudor times you couldn’t always just go out and buy what
you needed, you had to make it yourself. Will the children have
the patience to make their own butter?
2. Money and Number in Tudor Times
The children learn about Tudor money and prices and also practise
their Maths skills in a Roman Numerals game (Yes, the Tudors
used these on official documents!).
3. Tudor Handwriting
It’s not easy to master the art of writing with a quill pen.
Will the children be able to copy their pieces without making blots?
4. Tudor Teaching
What was it like being in a Tudor school? The children will find
out with lessons on Latin translation and spelling. Let’s
hope they don’t find their Tudor teacher too intimidating!
