Learning and Outreach Service – Important Notice

March 28, 2019 | Uncategorised | David Birks | No comment

Dear Teachers,

As you are all aware Trowbridge Museum is going through a major £2.5m Heritage Lottery Fund/Town Council funded redevelopment and currently we are running an outreach-only service for schools. Unfortunately, we have decided to temporarily suspend our school learning and outreach service until January 2020, enabling us to focus on the developing the new museum’s displays and enacting the activity plan. We will honour any existing bookings, but will not take any more bookings for 2019.

One of the key elements of the project is the creation of new primary and secondary school workshops which will focus on the area’s textile and weaving heritage, as well as new STEM workshops which will draw on the Museum’s industrial machinery displays and the processes involved in the woollen cloth manufacture. We are looking for schools to help us develop and trial these workshops over the coming 15 months. If you are interested in working with Trowbridge Museum at this exciting time, please get in touch. We are also planning to host a number of INSET days, which will promote our new and expanded education offering. We’ll notify schools as these are arranged.

From the start of April 2019, we will be based in the Civic Centre at St Stephen’s Place and although we are not able to run outreach workshops we are in a position to loan out history resources from our handling collection.

We are very excited by the expansion project which will see the Museum double in size. The new Museum, which is due to re-open in August 2020 will feature new displays interpreting the social and industrial heritage of the Town and a brand new Learning Hub. Our policy on charging will remain the same with schools within the area served by the Town Council having free access to Museum-based workshops.

If you have any questions about Trowbridge Museum’s Learning and Outreach service then do please get in touch with either myself, David Birks, or my colleague, Nikki Ritson, on 01225 751 339 or email us at david.birks@trowbridge.gov.uk or nikki.ritson@trowbridge.gov.uk.

We look forward to working with you and your students in the future.

Yours sincerely,

David Birks
Learning and Outreach Officer

Its official: Onwards and Upwards!

October 5, 2017 | Uncategorised | David Birks | No comment

Our £2.4 million expansion plans were given a significant boost this week with a National Lottery grant of £1,172,500. This was the biggest grant to be awarded in Wiltshire.

Trowbridge has a rich and rare townscape built upon the manufacturing of West of England woollen cloth…Now Lottery funding is set to conserve the historic building, expand gallery space and create new facilities for visitors including a lift and library and learning space. Displays will be reimagined and the textile heritage of other buildings will be told through a new app.

Nerys Watts, Head of Heritage Lottery Fund South West, said, ‘Thanks to money raised by National Lottery players, we’re delighted to support Trowbridge Museum as it begins an exciting new chapter in telling the story of the town and its fascinating heritage. As well as conserving the historic Home Mill, this project will transform the way collections are displayed, improve access for people of all ages and create vital new community and learning space’.
